cj,

Archaic usages. Not to be used outside of historical context.

1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.
2. (often initial capital letter) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.
3. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism.
4. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible

You are certainly right that those are archaic usages.

Modern day liberal is nearly 180 degree opposite of the 19th and early 20th century liberal. It is not just that modern day liberals have sacrificed personal freedoms at the altar of all powerful government, these days, even the most elementary freedom (IMO), which is freedom of conscience is under assault by liberals.

The government is the current equivalent of the aristocrat, and we are the modern equivalent of serfs. Modern day liberals are out to make the aristocrat more powerful, the serfs weaker.
