Nice post Elroy. Keep in mind though that iranian influence in iraq should be limited to the shiaa areas. A united iraq under iran protectorate is not in the cards because of the opposition they will face from sunni arabs. That gets us back to bidens soft partition plan as a possible solution.
One other thing that nadine continues to harp on---iranian support of shiaa militias who end up attacking us. First its natural for iran to support fellow shiaas. And its natural for shiaa militias to want foreigners out of iraq. Thus iran weapons are used against us. Nothing new here. Same in vietnam. Whose weapons were killing american kids back then? Didnt stop us from talking detente with USSR and nixon going to china in 72. If nadine/neocons ruled then, there would have been no detente with ruskys and no rapprochement with china. Imagine the world without those two things which ultimately paved the way for the collapse of communism. So detente and rapprochement with iran is certainly worth a try. Both sides have been obstructionist. Its time to try again because if only because both sides have too much to lose by not trying. As for iraq, let the iranians/militias/maliki try to find a solution there. Shiaa have little interest in governing sunni iraqis. Contested area are on the edges and boundaries and that will have to be worked out by the three groups. We should also help iran and turkey with their border problems with our allies the kurds. Kurdistan needs to understand the last thing they or we need is destabilization of the situations on the borders. Sure we want to replace mullahs but not that way with non-persian kurds. Thats a recipe for disaster. Same with turks.

Explain why a 20 year old Iranian kid or 30 year Iranian mother or 50 year old Iranian Kurdish farmer has to hate the USA. They don't - I know that, and you should know that.

I know they don't hate us, it's their own government they can't stand. But they don't run Iran, and it doesn't look like the mullahs' government will fall anytime soon. If the mullahs don't have popular support - which they don't - that's all the more reason why they need to keep Iranian minds focussed on an external enemy - and that's us. Marg bar Amrika! etc.

Saying the average Iranian doesn't hate America is about as useful as saying the average German didn't hate America in 1939. The proper answer in both cases is, so what?
