It is the "preponderance" of evidence. Not one piece or another piece of evidence. Science is a consensus based enterprise. Pointing to what one person or another person says or pointing to this piece of evidence or that piece of evidence completely misses the point. Unless, of course, the evidence truly falsifies the whole theory. But even then, science proceeds cautiously. A new paradigm that explains the new evidence using the parts of the old paradigm that have not been falsified must be invented.

Please, go read Thomas Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. It remains the best book out there on how scientific theories work.
