false advertising is easy to pick up on

That must explain why the TV and radio propaganda broadcast for 20 years by Arafat never worked and why the entire concept of homicidal suicide bombers was such a flop in the Arab territories of Israel. Oops, the thesis you expound is wrong in the Middle East, and in the rest of this universe. There is a saying in advertising: "If you say a thing enough times it becomes truth."

"Peter. After 50 years of virtual slavery, they never gave up on human freedom. Iran mullahs in power for only 30 years."

They are learning. Give them another 30 and civilization may break down like it has in the Arab territories of Israel. The West failed the Middle East. Britain made principalities and then turned them loose when it was no longer cool to have colonies. A millennia of success through deception and strength has created a culture that is only marginally compatible with freedom. In the Far East they stayed longer and ruled through Governors rather than by empowering a tribal chieftain. This created bureaucracies that mirrored Britain's; while not perfect it was better than most government of the time.

In Persia they have a much richer history of central government and of success. IMHO, the people of Persia would be more able to self govern given an opportunity than even their neighbors in Iraq. It is very sad to me to see the cradle of mankind in such turmoil. I am encouraged by the recent successes that the surge has produced.
