I doubt it's a real incentive for illegals. I think it's indicative that we're going to be repeating more of the mistakes from the 70's and the post-Vietnam era. The Democrats are already thinking of ways to divert spending to the domestic economy when they downsize the budget for Bush's military economy.

I think the incentive to get the monthly benefit check -- $600? -- per anchor baby plus the much lower odds of being extradited (with the US citizen baby) are far more incentive than a $5k savings bond which is worth about $2077 dollars (18 years @ 5%) or just over three months of their expected Welfare check. In other words, not a big boost over what they already get.

However, it sure won't make things better...

It would be a whole lot simpler and less vote-buying in appearance to create a new credit against taxes to be used in paying tuition for a child, starting small and escalating to $5k in 18 years (beyond the current tax credits).

p.s. I can't stand our tax code... what a twisted web.

edit: not sure of the savings bond would be $5k at start or end... most bonds are based on maturity value so I'd guess $5k at the end ==> $2077 at the start

Giveaways one way or the other are chump change. The big issues are border security, balancing the budget and restoring confidence in the USA again overseas.. Hopefully we make better choices than continuing the Bush policies or turning half this country into a third world barrio in another generation..

"The real fallout comes from yet another incentive for illegals to deliver yet another anchor baby. Endangering themselves just to get here."

Yeah, on the surface. But way below the surface... suppose-- La Clintoon is a real Machiavella. She sees that babies of illegal families get $5K if pregnant mama comes here, where baby will be delivered FREE in any hospital that accepts Medicare or Medicaid -- ES LA LEY!

So mama's family might give less than that, say half? to coyotes for bringing her here. If Senor Coyote has to wait 18 years for his money, well, $5K has an NPV of about $2k @ 5% interest. So, Sr. Coyote may be offered only 1/2 of NPV for bringing pregnant mama here; maybe less, considering a risk premium. After all, he has to know where the family is for eighteen years; something our government cannot do.

What a brilliant scheme to limit illegal immigration by shutting off profit to coyotes! If I hadn't already given Ron Paul my money, I might send some to La Clintoon. Wow!

P.S. My wife says, if anybody gets $5K for having a baby here, she also wants $5K for not having any babies, for working, paying for healthcare, for never having been on welfare, and for paying taxes. Dunno why she's so bitchy.
