If the dollar drop 1% a day it would be nearly worthless in short order.

Such a move would affect where people hold dollars. The pricing unit itself is meaningless.

BTW you can get a price in Yen or pounds right now, just as you can get a price of gold in yen or pounds or euros now.

With the dollar dropping they obviously would have been better off not holding dollars.

No one has to hold dollars to get a price of oil in any currency they want. Just as no one has to hold dollars to get a price of gold or even buy gold.
