He also reiterates what objective observers have known for some time about the program:

According to a study in the journal Inquiry, 60 percent of children eligible for SCHIP already had private coverage when the program was created …

This means that SCHIP covers “four previously uninsured Americans for the price of 10.” Surely, even a “progressive” can see that this is not cost effective.

Also the president's plan already includes a 25% increase in funding, the program has recently been used for non children, so it isn't just about providing health care insurance for children.

And why should upper middle class children who already have insurance have their insurance paid for by the government? Should someone working at McDonald's have to subsidize the costs of children of parents who make several times more than he does? (Up to $82,600 for a family of four).

And the current bill is faulty even if you do want to subsidize families making $80k.

"HR 976 would increase spending by 121% over five years. But it would then cut spending 65 percent over two years, to below where it is now."

The program would be changed by the law from "subsidize the health care of poor children", to "pay for relatively wealthy children, with the hope that we can use this as a lever to fully nationalized health care. There isn't any reason to support if if you oppose fully nationalized health care.
