I think the future in the middle east might be progressive islamic states. Those that are now repressive like Iran may very well change gradually allowing more and more democracy, not less along with basic human freedoms. To foster this, it is imperative for the US to be steadfast but not totally hostile, tough but not confrontational etc. etc.

A country free of terrorists in high office would be an improvement. Leadership who denies learning the lessons of history would be an improvement.

It just makes me sick every time I think about it that Jimmy Carter created the mess in the first place. There don't seem to be many end games that result in a peaceful transition of power to a democratic leadership in Iran.
