What I think is appropriate is the preservation of the Union, the most successful political and economic union in human history.

It was fun going round this what-if with you, c2. But seriously, no President or Congress would go down in history as the anti-Lincoln that oversaw the dissolution of the United States of America. Won't happen. We shed bled over it once, we'd shed blood over it again. Once you join the club, you're in for good. Comparing LA pique over smirched honor to the British Crown and Parliament denying the colonists their basic common law rights is just foolish.
