US bank failures as a percentage of total banks hit 27.4% in 1933, if you can even imagine that kind of nightmare -- the system is a lot different and better regulated now, as well as being more concentrated in a smaller number of large institutions, so we're not likely to ever see that kind of ratio again.

The risk now instead is not the absolute number or even the percentage of failures -- it's that one of the big guys chokes
