Dont think that is true about the weapons although US tilted toward iraq just as we seem to be tipping to sunnis today. Iran seems to be the greatest threat to the oil, particularly the saudi oil and that I assume is why the policy is what it is.

No one knows...they said it in Farsi and when they were able get someone who seemed able to translate the darned stuff the Iranians were said to be denying something called the Holocaust which apparently happened in Europe during the 40s.

That ended all future efforts to translate.

the Iraqi weapons in the 80s were German and Russian, not American.

The unified hope of the entire Gulf and America in the 80s was that both sides would lose. So the war was kept going as long as possible. pure realpolitik
