What are you smoking?!hindu.com >>The proposed multi-billion Iran-Pakistan-India gas pipeline project will become a reality by 2010, said the Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Secretary, S. C. Tripathi. Addressing the Managing Committee of the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (Assocham) here on Friday, Mr. Tripathi said the three nations were serious that the project should take off. "Our internal estimates are that it will take another three years to visualise the project by involving the representatives of Iran, Pakistan and India. One year will be spent on hard negotiations and another year will be required to obtain financial closures for the project. In my view, the gas should touch the Indian boarders subsequently,'' he said. These observations came from the Petroleum Secretary in response to a question raised by the chamber President, Mahendra K. Sanghi, as to how many more years would it take for the gas pipeline project to materialise. He said the Petroleum and Natural Gas Ministry was working closely with the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to vigorously follow the developments with the partner countries. "In fact, a four-member delegation has just returned from Iran today and I have yet to take a briefing from the delegations,'' said Mr. Tripathi. He ridiculed the cynicism about the project on security grounds, strongly arguing that Iran would get higher price for its gas through the execution of this project while Pakistan and India would be supplied gas at a much lower price that paid by them now.<< Of course, I do appreciate that the US is trying to scuttle the project but I am unaware that it has succeeded in doing so.
