You're probably right. Still, it seems unimaginable to me that the entire Japanese fleet could have moved across the Pacific undetected by someone.

A fascinating movie was made, pure fiction of course, called "The Final Countdown". Starred Kirk Douglas as captain of the USS Nimitz, which disappears at sea. It reappears off the coast of Pearl Harbor the morning of December 7, 1941, discovering the Japanese fleet about to launch the attack. Realizing what is happening, they discuss altering history by wiping out the out-dated fleet with the fire power of the modern Nimitz. Of course, they opt not to do that... darn it! VBG.
