What great stories and memorabilia! I recall seeing "In Harm's Way" but can't tell you much about it. Seems like it had John Wayne and, maybe Angie Dickinson?? Not sure about the female.

I had an uncle aboard ship (not sure which one) during the battle of Midway. When they found out he was an accomplished meat cutter as a civilian, they immediately drafted him to the galley. He told about all the great meals he had and never did see action as the Gunner's Mate his rate called for. Still, the ship saw a lot of action and he was glad to get out of there. He was drafted at the age of 35, which made him an old man right off the bat.
