Obviously, that must have been the way it was. There is a story about an early radar unit detecting some movement out there, but it was discounted as "friendly" aircraft. We may never really know the entire truth about that.

We had broken their code and knew they were coming to Midway. We knew the route they were taking. We still had a hell of a time finding them with our scout planes which is your only way to find them back then.
