we bore into trees with an increment borer in order to count the growth rings without cutting the tree down. Also, we can estimate defect that way. Increment = growth.

An increment borer is basically a hollow tube of very expensive Swedish steel, with an auger on one end. The other end fits into a square hole in the center of the handle, which provides the leverage to bore into the tree. When not in use, the borer is stored in the handle. It cuts a core of wood out of the tree which you extract with a device called a spoon, which fits into the tube and grasps the core in order to draw it out.
