Peter, The only time a cowboy yanks on the reins it is because he dos'nt know how to ride, or is a mean SOB. You see that at rodeos sometimes, but that is a different breed of cowboy, and the stock they ride. I have seen many cowboys able to move the horse without even touching the reins. The horse must be like the dressage horses because if the cowboy shifts his place on the saddle the horse knows where to go. If you have ever seen a the cutting of cattle with a horse you would see that the rider seldom needs to touch the reins.

A good cowboy knows he may have to need his horse to keep him alive so he is kind to the horse.
