I've heard of mules, have seen some donkeys and lots of horses, but have never had anything to do with mules.

In NZ, ploughing was done with draught horses. en.wikipedia.org But in my time, Massey Ferguson tractors were the main farm power.

NZ has always been more of a grass-growing place, for sheep, cows and other livestock, rather than a ploughing place for crops.

That $450/mule does seem too high. But be advised that the USA shipped thousands of mules to Greece in the late 1940s for the Greek Civil War and the Marshall Plan. Maybe some of your grandma's mules became anti-communist foot soldiers...
