Unfortunately, this Reader's Digest Condensed History of AMD isn't accurate. When AMD had superior parts, the first 1 ghz desktop chips, opteron servers, etc. They couldn't get all the oems to build them. And the oems that carried them were bullied by Intel to delay entry of the AMD products or only put them in one line of their computer lineup. Comparing the early opteron servers to their xenon counterpart was like comparing a sony plasma tv to a standard rca crt tv with the sony tv being $500 dollars cheaper to buy. But low and behold xenon still got 80% share or more of the server market. Would you rather buy Heinz ketchup or the walmart brand if the Heinz was 50 cents cheaper? At various times in their history AMD was the Heinz ketchup and the walmart Intel brand still outsold them. AMD shouldn't have just competed and been profitable during these periods, they should have run away with the market.
