My dad was good at pruning trees and taught me what I believe to be the way to do it. He always cut at right angles to the limb and we painted the cut with enamel (the only kind of paint available in those days).

I now live in a town home community. The association brings in a bunch of hacks each year to "prune" trees. They make a mess of things and never cover the "wound" with any protection. It's a wonder the pruned trees survive. Now, the original cottonwood trees are starting to die off (give or take 35 years) and they are an expensive problem. Costs some $500-$700 to take one down and grind the stump. They never should have been planted in the first place, but they grow fast and provide a lot of shade.
