Cottonwood trees live about 35 years, typically. Once they start to die off, they go in about 2-4 years. If not taken down, a good wind will put one down, often across someone's roof. While they die off, the bark peels and falls all over the place and they just get ugly. We have several in varying stages of "death" and the association hates to spend the money to get rid of them. We have to nag the "you know what" out of them to do anything.
