Your argument is that people serve as mercenaries often for economic reasons - and I know this is the case-for example the French Foreign Legion - but I think it is a bit much to cite British Imperialism for the South Africans - a lot of water under the bridge over the last 100 years - those of British stock are too inclined to don sackcloth and ashes
