Snow is good insulation. Ask any eskimo. They burn only a wick oil lamp in the igloo. If the snow hut turns to ice, it loses its insulation value. For this reason they leave a breathing hole.

Burying ddh water pipe in snow is considered important.

The Timmins heap leaching experiment in the winter by Pamour was not well documented by I remember reading about it. I lived there at the time, but never visited the site.

Animals hibernate under brush piles covered with snow. You can see their breathing steam through holes in the snow. Bears tend to breath about once every 30 seconds or more as I recall. Normal slow human breathing rate is about 12 times a minute.

Snow cover is huge. I live in snow country and if we get a cold snap before we get snow (which is common as we live right on the divide between a maritime climate and a very cold interior climate)) pipes freeze all over the city. We always hope for a snow fall before we get a bad freeze.

Our lives revolve around interior high pressure systems and maritime low pressure systems.
