We noticed quite a number of infected trees in Montana on our trip this summer.

The beetles are one of nature's self-correcting methods, trying to bring the environment back to equilibrium. Nature's schedule is often incompatible with human needs, but humans can compensate with proper management.

Proper management becomes impossible if the influence is dominated by the "Not In My Backyard" syndrome, or "I Know What Is Best" or "Cutting Trees is Always Bad."
