So you torture him and he still doesn't give you the code.

Let's escalate.

The terrorists have rounded up all the children of America and they are going to kill them with a bomb. We need to get the code and defuse the bomb. The screws tighten, the fingernails begin to yield. The water rises. The rack pulls sinews from bone. The terrorists turns his head, looks at you, and dies. The bomb explodes. Everyone dies and its all your fault.

PS - Next time call the MIP team.

WG is right. Spend your time getting the kids out of the school. Or all kids out of all schools, if you don't know which one. You won't get the truth in time.
And, if he is a James Bond wannabe with a cyanide tooth implant,... :>)

Legit torture Michael?!

Have you thought this through? Have you for example read up on Khaled el-Masri is a German citizen who was detained by CIA operatives and flown to a prison in Kabul, Afghanistan to be tortured for a year, only to be set lose in a remote corner of Albania once it was discovered it was a mistaken identity?

What about Mahrer Ahrar, a Canadian citizen who was sent to Syria for a year to be tortured, only to be released again after it was found out that he had no connections to terrorist groups. His case was not even one of mistaken identity, but a guilty until proven innocent case.

Or what about...

And these are the ones that we know about because they are educated people who sued the government. How many innocent local Afghans or Iraqis have been tortured that we don't hear about? Do you have any idea what the success rate of the methods you are proposing are? Do have any safe guards against false arrests and mistakes?

99.99% of the times, the real world is not as cut and dry as you make it in your examples. In the remaining 0.01% of the times, torture is not as effective as you seem to think. Whatever the minuscule success rate you think you can have, I suggest you forgo it and chuck it up under acceptable price for not losing one's soul.
