"I know you don't have any moral objection to that, but to me that's no different than killing your own newborn child to save yourself." Why? I wouldn't have used the embryo to have a child, as I don't want any, so that NEVER would have been the choice. The VAST majority of embryos never become children - they are just sloughed off during a woman's period. Why waste 'em? Your attitude isn't scientific at all. Besides, techniques are being developed ( in CA! ) that will hopefully end the need for human embryos. Are you REALLY an Ivy League educated engineer?
