I used quotes in my initial reference because illegality is relative to who has the guns. Once Israel had the guns, then the Arabs were "illegal'. The Israeli war for independence was planned, led, and fought primarily by European Jews displaced by the Nazis, and not the native Jewish population resident in Palestine in the '30s. The archtypical Jewish patriot is of course Menachem Begin, head of Irgun, who by all accounts had an "interesting" life. Condemned by the British as a terrorist, he subsequently rose through the Israeli political system to lead his country into the Camp David accords. He is ample proof that it truly is possible to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Would you say that Bush is also a leader like Begin ? wg
