He gets credit in some circles for "leading" the war of independence, but was by that time solely a political figure. The terrorists in Irgun had bolder plans and weren't afraid to spill blood, an Israeli trait that continues to this day. Without Begin's initiative and ruthlessness, British colonels would still be taking their afternoon tea at the King David Hotel. wg
