Michael, you do realize, don't you, that if you want to continue to live free you have a whole lot more to fear from your own government than you do from terrorists or foreign powers?

Assuming you understand that, do you really want to allow the government to get in the business of choosing whether it will listen to your conversations, track your mail, or monitor your financial transactions?

And, please don't reply assuming that the government will act with restraint and with the best of motives. There were some very good reasons why the founding fathers were obsessed with limiting the power of the government and why they weren't willing to assume self restraint and good motives. Those reasons are as valid today as they were back then. In fact a good argument can be made that they are more valid in a complex, technologically complicated country with a population of 300+ million people.

Or maybe I misinterpreted your statement or I'm missing something? Ed
