Textainer Group Holdings IPO Prices at $16.50 Per Share, Below Expected Price Range

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Textainer Group Holdings Ltd., a lessor of shipping containers, edged higher in their Wednesday debut, despite the company's initial public offering pricing at $16.50 per share, well below the anticipated price range.

The Hamilton, Bermuda-based company expected the IPO, which totaled 9 million shares, to price between $19 per share and $21 per share. Shares opened at $16.65 and rose 43 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $16.93 in morning trading.

Textainer plans to use the proceeds to repay debt, for general corporate purposes and to purchase interests in subsidiary Textainer Marine Containers Ltd. The company said it may also use some of the proceeds for fleet expansion and acquisitions.

Founded in 1979, Textainer has a total fleet of more than 1.3 million containers and leases containers to more than 300 shipping lines and other lessees. The company primarily leases dry freight containers -- large, standardized steel boxes used to transport cargo by multiple modes of transportation, including ships, trains and trucks.

Credit Suisse and Wachovia Securities are serving as the IPO's lead underwriters. Jefferies & Co., Piper Jaffray and Fortis Securities LLC are also underwriting the offering.

Textainer has granted the underwriters the option to buy up to an additional 1.4 million shares to cover any overallotments.

Textainer's shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol "TGH."
