Higher thought doesn't go away because of lengthy arduous conditions. And minds don't "snap". Given different situations, one uses different strategies, but that's not snapping. I have never killed anybody, but I can easily imagine myself doing so. That's not "snapping". That's different problems to deal with.

People are different from each other. We are not just limbic system animals. Yes, we have brain stems which give us autonomic responses. But we also have brains on top, which run the show, supervising those autonomic functions. Even in great fear, we can choose to do something, or not.
