What choice do they have? The fundamentalist base, the bulk of the 28%-30% hardcore Bush supporters, has got to be appeased somehow. And they can't really push the issues of gay marriage, making abortions illegal, banning stem cell research, expanding faith-based initiatives, etc. without alienating independents any more than they have. Compared to that, questioning evolution, whether they really do or not, is an easy choice. It isn't a hot button issue with the independents, so they won't care. It isn't like any of those candidates will raise the issue of equal time with evolution in schools. But they can sort of dangle that in front of the fundamentalists with some code phrases in hopes that they stay on board.
