Koan,

You are doing that strange dichotomous thing again. Evaluating and promoting programs that have benefits as opposed to those that have no progressive benefits is exactly the point I was making.

I would have to respectfully disagree with you about the myth of entitlement programs. I worked in social services for over ten years and saw that sense of entitlement expressed repeatedly through many programs. It may have been unintentional and inadvertent, but the provision of support without expectations is devastating.

Are there successful programs? Absolutely. Are there programs that have run as rampant as a cancer and are as lethal? Absolutely.

I worked with Head Start the first year it was in existence, and thought it was a terrific program. And I would hardly classify community colleges as "safety net" programs. Both these programs involve certain criteria and expectations in their enactment.

As for your own children, I have no idea what the point of that was, although I would love to know what "symbolance of self-actualization" means.
