Arran, you should have a little read of history of Hong Kong. The British leased it. The lease was up. Pretty simple really. China reoccupied it, sensibly keeping what the British had established. Killing geese that lay golden eggs isn't too bright. No doubt they will strangle it eventually. Taiwan is quite different.
