We have supported and protected the mentally retarded and others because they were related to us. Same reason why extended families helped raise children that weren't theirs. Or when a hunter was injured and couldn't hunt, the others didn't just say "he can't hunt? Then he starves"... Because it all comes back to the tribe. In a tribe, everyone is related to each other in various degrees. So anything that kept members alive meant their genes survived. Now, it was often tempered with a dose of practicality. If resources were scarce and the tribe faced starvation, then the weaker ones were often sacrificed. But that was always a last resort. When resources were available, the weak were protected.
