James > I was seeing SA as a place rife with political unrest and criminal activity that affected those who didn't drive around with body guards and armored limos that lived in secure communities.

In many places it is like that and many people do drive round with bodyguards. I have an extensive electronic security system at my home with video surveillance and an immediate-call, armed response service. The walls around the property have electric fencing and razor wire. There is also a private patrol system in the suburb monitoring any suspicious activity. This is apart from the police. Some suburbs are completely walled off as a community and one has to sign in before entering or leaving.

Amongst the general population, there isn't a day that passes where some form of insurrection or mass protest isn't taking place somewhere. Today and yesterday, the police were firing rubber bullets at students at the local university who were protesting about fee increases. On other days, it can be a strike for higher wages or a protest about poor "service delivery" or lack of jobs or housing.
