Four bills by Marin Assemblyman Jared Huffman won Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's signature Friday as the governor endorsed seven bills that he said reflect a commitment to "green" policies.
Huffman's bills were part of the San Rafael Democrat's legislative platform aimed at combating global warming.

"Passing these types of environmental reforms is the reason I ran for office," Huffman said in a statement. "These bills represent the values of my district and I'm honored to have them put into law."

The four bills include Assembly Bill 1109, which directs the California Energy Commission to slash California's energy use for indoor lighting by 50 percent, and outdoor and commercial lighting by 25 percent by 2018.

Huffman also won Schwarzenegger's signature on AB 1470, creating a 10-year incentive program aimed at converting a half-million California consumers to solar heating for homes and businesses.

In addition, the governor signed AB 1406, encouraging the use of treated recycled water in condominiums for toilets and outdoor watering. State law currently allows the water to be used in apartments.

The fourth Huffman bill, AB 1560, to win Schwarzenegger's signature was legislation requiring the energy commission to

set water conservation standards for new residential and non-residential buildings.
The governor said the legislation he approved will "continue to keep California at the forefront of energy and water efficiency."

The Republican governor has won national publicity for his support of bills aimed at combating global warming.

"I think he means this stuff," Huffman said of the governor's concern about global warming.

Huffman said by working with manufacturers and power companies he came up with legislation that provides practical energy-saving reforms that Schwarzenegger could support.
