It was already done before Hitler was there. Indeed, church and state are still merged in Germany as it is in many European countries. But, only the "right" churches. Which is the reason behind the separation of church and state here. They wanted the government out of the business of backing any religion for any reason. In other words, freedom from religion. Which is why Congress met on Christmas day until the 19th century.
