They became common because the gov't, in its infinite wisdom, made competition with wages between companies illegal during WW2- -so they competed with benefits. Hence compnany subsidized health insurance.

That's exactly right. The second that goes away, so that everybody is responsible for their own insurance/health care costs is the second things get better. The health care fix is easy. Nobody proposes it. Like so many things (the war on drugs being another good example), rather than scrapping a government program that doesn't work we make them bigger. Like loosing money on every sale but making it up on volume. Lunacy.
