It's a matter of how dry the needles are and how many you put on the fire at once. If they are dry and you just put a small amount on the fire at once, they will burn pretty smoke free.

The trick is not putting too much on the fire. Wait until the fire is really not before putting any on. You will still get some intermittent smoke columns, but they are short lived. I also used a blower to get additional oxygen to the fire.
