Excellent! You and Fred are absoluteley correct. By imagining the figure spinning in a predetermined direction, with my eyes closed for several seconds, allows me to train my brain to pre-select the direction of rotation, when I open my eyes and view the graphic (with a very high degree of accuracy over many iterations!). Fascinating. Another element of the illusion is that I see the speed of rotation slow significantly, just as the the image changes direction, with my eys open.
