Actually I am interested in the realities, not paranoid fantasies.

The reality is that something like 40 million households own their houses outright, with no mortgage. Of those, most have their credit card and other debts well under control.

I was pointing out what the irresponsible fringe might owe, which could be huge. It was not encouraging to read today that the U. S. Treasury is trying to help the largest U. S. banks make arrangements to continue financing the subprime mess instead of taking their losses.

What we need to watch out for is measures that spread the responsibility for foolish borrowing and lending onto the disciplined citizens. This is already happening with the deliberate debasing of the value of the dollar. This is not a paranoid fantasy. Look at how the dollar has dropped:
