I believe attorney general office should look into the practice in your state. I cannot understand how a corporation can charge you for a service they have yet to provide and book it as a receivable and included on income statements.

my experience is they will immediately take away enough of your credit limit on your credit card to make sure they receive payment and your card is not maxed out before you arrive. this is not charging your card, nor are they booking a receivable which they have not earned. It is a credit control to make sure they receive payment , when payment is due and not have a credit card come up not authorized because the client maxed out available credit authorization.

I see nothing wrong in this practice , it may have been implemented because they experienced a good percentage of travellers maxing out cards and unable to pay their bill.

If I have to cancel a reservation, I usually have to pay for one nights stay unless I cancel 24 hours in advance. And I am usually told that I won't be charged until I arrive. I did have a problem with a Canadian hotel last year. They just flat told me I'd be charged for the stay whether I came or not.

I think it depends on who your dealing with.
