"It is not necessary for Iran to actually destroy Israel with weapons, they can destroy it with the threat.... Iran could destroy the Zionist dream." Speaking afterward in English, Sneh told The Jerusalem Post that Israel must also prepare an "indigenous" option for dealing with Iran, but he declined to elaborate. He said only that such an option should be employed as a last resort, saying Israel needed to have alternatives "on the table and ready to go." "All I will say is that we need to create indigenous options," Sneh, a former deputy defense minister, said. "We need a strong shield on our periphery and an ability to act beyond the horizon." In the speech, entitled "2008 - the year of decisions," Sneh laid out three issues - Iran, the Palestinians, and center-left Israeli politics - on which he felt strong decisions must be made in the year 2008. "This is the year where issues will come to a head and we will be forced to make serious decisions," he said. Sneh said Israel must learn to be self-reliant in dealing with Iran from a military perspective, and that although America would soon be led by a new president, Israel could rely on any American administration to support a military maneuver against Iran. "Just as Iran is creating a new Persian Empire - stretching from Afghanistan to the south of Iraq, to Syria, and the Hizbullah network in Lebanon - we must create our own network," he said. "And we can't create our own network unless the Palestinian issue is seriously moving towards resolution." Sneh, who met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas Saturday, said both the Palestinian leadership and population were seriously interested in negotiating a final peace agreement with Israel. "We need to be prepared to divide Israel, with 78 percent becoming a Jewish state and 22% going to the Palestinians," he said. Most of the Knesset and the Israeli public currently back peace negotiations, Sneh said, adding that it was up to the leadership to step up and make "serious decisions." jpost.com

Geez, MQ and TJ: Haven't had my first cup of coffee and the the first thing I see. *castration is probably a liberating experience* i agree with Emat here boys, time to get back on subject, you guys are far to brilliant to be absent from the real concern of the thread. How do you see this sub-prime situation playing out? Are we indeed through the worse of it? as Paulson claims or is it the tip of the iceberg as Rogers and Faber etc., claim? There is certainly no mortgages available today for anyone with spotty credit and in certain locations, such as minority areas, this is creating real problems, as most would be buyers can not qualify and many existing owners can't afford the payments. Foreclosures don't help because there is no market. If the banks control the actions of Ben B. as suggested on this thread then surely they would want to get the market active again? Comments?

TJ, a friend and I discussed years ago how castration would indeed be a liberating experience. We blokes get led into such difficulty and lifelong labour by our gonads, all too often with an early demise. But there are other aspects to be considered. Such as who makes the decision. I think 5 billion people would prefer not to have China in charge of such decisions on their behalf. China has demonstrated how they handle people in Tibet and Tienanmen. While Tibet has moved into the historical zone, it's recent enough, with Hu Jintao having been in charge of major Tibetan suppression, that the rest of us see it as part of the current modus operandi. Recently, China has been shooting and killing escaping Tibetans. Most people around the world recognize barbarians when we see them. We see the virulent threats against Taiwanese. We understand that China's bosses won't change their spots. We want to see them kept in their cage, not gaining control of us to arrange castrations and worse. Meanwhile, your virulent antipathy to Japanese continues apace. It's looking a bit obsessive TJ, unbalanced and worrying. It's as though you are gearing yourself up psychologically for an attack against those foreign-devil Japanese. Recommendation: have a nice cup of tea and a lie down.
