MUMBAI: State-run firm GAIL on Friday entered into an agreement with Rashtriya Chemicals & Fertilizers Ltd (RCF) for setting up coal gasification project in Orissa.

RCF and GAIL have signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly implement coal gasification project at Talcher in Orissa, the company informed the Bombay Stock Exchange.

Synthesis gas produced in the coal gasification plant would be used in production of ammonia, urea and other chemicals.

The project would add to production capacity of 11.55 lakh MT of urea per year, while the estimated cost of Ammonia-Urea Project is about Rs 3,200 crore, the communique said.

RCF and GAIL had independently explored possibility of utilising coal to provide an answer to the fast depleting gas resources in the country.

Both the companies carried out simultaneous studies on viability of coal gasification plants and chemical/fertilizer complex and the studies have indicated viability of such a project, it said.

Department of Fertilizers entrusted RCF with revival of closed fertilizer units at Talcher and Durgapur.

As a part of the revival of Talcher Unit, RCF carried out Techno Economic Feasibility study considering coal gasification route which was found economically viable, it added.
