Cheney didn't fear Iran. His Halliburton subsid did illegal business with Iran despite the Clinton ban. And they got away with it.

The fact is, and look it up, in the 2001 Iranian elections, moderate more pro-western reps swept into power. After 9-11, iran offered help and delivered on some levels. And there was a pro US rally in Tehran after 9-11.

But Bush-Cheney didn't want a moderate Iran. They wanted an excuse to attack them after they attacked Iraq. Probably just top steal the oil, but also to please rightwing Israelis who had infiltrated the neocon thinktanks.

Anyway, if you don't like the current leadership in iran, blame Bush-Cheney, not the Iranian people. How would you like it if China invaded Canada then called the USA "evil". WOuldn't you vote for your more hawkish candidate even if he's an A-hole? That's exactly what happened in Iran. Bush caused the sharp shift away from western reconciliation.
