"Polls, plus a wave of G.O.P. retirements"

I think there is a bit of calculus behind the retirements. I think the Republicans are hoping there will be a backlash against incumbents in general and the hope is that a lot of the Democratic incumbents will go down and in the districts where there are retirements, it will be a new Democrat vs. a new Republican, so they have a chance to keep the seat.

"There’s also disgust, even in the corporate world, with the corruption and incompetence of the Bush years."

This is their weak point. Losing their grip on corporate donations means they won't be able to get a larger wad of cash than the Democrats in campaigns. This has been their advantage for decades. Being able to outspend your opponent is a big advantage. Being able to greatly outspend your opponent is almost insurmountable.

I just got an email from my cousin's wife........the email wasn't condemning anti war activists so much as trying to show support for the troops. But similar photos to those below were included in the email suggesting the the people below are anti war protestors when in fact, they are the crazies from that church in Kansas. Its infuriating.......I suspect the pro war hawks are sending photos all around to their peers suggesting that the people below are typical of the people who oppose the war.
