That's exactly it. Spain exported its feudal system. The Santa Maria was full of Spanish aristocrats looking for their fiefs from the King. Spain was full, so to speak. So the monarchs exported their vassals to the New World and the feudal system along with them.

English colonists were free men looking for their own land to work with their own hands, protected by English rights. So the English colonies were full of land owners, and Spanish colonies were full of serfs on the encomienda.
