"It may create hatred, anger, and a strong desire for vengeance."

That is more understandable to me. However, you have to be careful about it or it can be as damaging.

Vengeance should have been enacted by taking down bin Laden. We were close, but got distracted by trying to implement neocon fantasies in the ME.

"If you can convince the people that want to kill Americans to stop, I will lose the desire to kill them."

As long as you restrict yourself to going after the ones with that as a goal, no problems here. The problem comes in when we start making up opponents. Kids with blinky lights aren't the threat. Neither are guys shooting the shit about destroying a bridge with cutting torches, although they bear watching in case they come up with something that might work.

Despite Vinny's fantasies, all Muslims aren't drooling over the prospect of killing Americans. Many of them, if they were to meet an American, would be trying to figure out how to get them to part with some money. Most of them just want to get through life the best way they can. And that almost never involves killing anyone. There have been Americans in many places in the ME and other places where Muslims abound for decades. Almost always with no problems. on a per capita basis those Americans were probably safer than at home.

What we need to do is concentrate on the few that actually do hate us and have the means to do something about it.

Instead of going out and making enemies.
