I think the ideal mix would be rooftop photovoltaic on every house, wind, hydro with nuclear and lastly natural gas to take up the slack. The goal should be to eliminate burning fuels for electricity.

re: Imagine another oil embargo. We'd be so screwed. Non-OPEC production is well under what it was during the Embargo, so as a result, OPEC controls a larger fraction of the overall market. That alone should be enough to explore alternatives. In addition, there is peak oil, sooner or later.

In the 70's I think we were still producing about 60% of our consumption. Now we are below 40%. It's our biggest national security threat...

re: Ah, crap. Who cares? The US is just going to sit with our collective thumbs up our ass until we get smacked in the head with the 2" by 4". Our wakeup call will be a full blown crisis.

The fuel crisis of and by itself will be devastating, but just imagine the spill over into our currency, bonds and debt. While the rest of the world might be able to get by, we will be hobbled by our 25%/world consumption. With $10 a gallon gas and it's impact on our economy who is going to accept our currency or buy our debt?

So many people think a robust economy is a birthright... when the crap hits the fan there will be a whole lot of folks jumping out windows.
